Chicagos Potter & Potter Auctions is hosting a counterculture and punk rock sale of fashion, artwork and memorabilia from the 1970s onward on March 6.

“Punks, Monsters, Smut & Madmen: A Countercultural Cross-Section” features more than 500 lots of countercultural items from the 1970s and forward, with many starting as low as $100.

Lots include numerous items from CBGB, the famed venue in Manhattan’s East Village, along with concert posters, tickets, and vinyl LPs, including from some of the most famous acts of the era, such as David Bowie and Blondie. A lock of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain’s hair, collected by a barber, is also up for sale.

Along with underground zines and comics, the auction features early artwork by “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, draw about five years before “The Simpsons” premiered.

There is also a lot featuring two John Waters screenplays: “Female Trouble” (1974) and “A Dirty Shame” (2003). The screenplay for “A Dirty Shame” is signed by Waters and cast members Tracey Ullman, Johnny Knoxville, Selma Blair, Chris Isaak, Suzanne Shepherd, and several others.

While not all of the lots are strictly “punk,” the auction offers a broad array of countercultural memorabilia.

Absentee bids are now open, with live bidding beginning on March 6 at 10 a.m. CST.
