Brooklyn Beckham spoke out publicly about his strained relationship with his family — including his parents, David and Victoria Beckham — and accused them of prioritizing their public image over his marriage to Nicola Peltz and personal wellbeing.

In a statement he shared via Instagram Stories on Monday, January 19, Brooklyn, 26, said he had remained quiet in the past, however, he felt forced to respond after their ongoing feud was continually making headlines.

“I have been silent for years and made every effort to keep these matters private,” he wrote, claiming his parents and their team continued to speak to the press.

Brooklyn pushed back on claims that his wife, Nicola, 31, controls him, saying, “I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.”

He went on to allege that his parents had been working behind the scenes to shape public narratives, adding that when it comes to his family, “Brand Beckham comes first.”

Brooklyn also accused his parents of attempting to interfere with his relationship with Nicola, claiming that tension between them began before their wedding.

“My mum cancelled making Nicola’s dress in the eleventh hour despite how excited she was to wear her design, forcing her to urgently find a new dress,” the former model wrote. “Weeks before our big day, my parents repeatedly pressured and attempted to bribe me into signing away the rights to my name, which would have affected me, my wife, and our future children.”

Brooklyn also described incidents surrounding the wedding itself, including a claim that his mother “danced very inappropriately on me in front of everyone.”

“I’ve never felt more uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life,” he continued. “We wanted to renew our vows so we could create new memories of our wedding day that bring us joy and happiness, not anxiety and embarrassment.”

Brooklyn concluded his message by saying that distancing himself from his family had improved his mental health.

“The narrative that my wife controls me is completely backwards. I have been controlled by my parents for most of my life,” he wrote. “I grew up with overwhelming anxiety. For the first time in my life, since stepping away from my family, that anxiety has disappeared.”
