Marvel Comics Legend Stan Lee Dead At 95

The writer helped create characters including Spider-Man, the X-Men, Thor & Iron Man.

Marvel comics legend Stan Lee has passed away at the age of 95. He worked as a writer, editor, and publisher and helped create some of the most famous superheroes of all time.

In recent years, he cameoed in every Marvel movie, often adding comic relief and delighting fans.

Stan, working with other artists like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, helped create iconic characters including Spider-Man, the Hulk, Doctor Strange, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Black Panther, the X-Men, Ant-Man, Iron Man and Thor. Through his work, he helped make Marvel a massive media company. This year, he walked the red carpets at both the Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War premieres.

His wife of 69 years, Joan, died in July 2017. In April of this year, he sued his former business manager for fraud and elder abuse. The case said that, while Stan was grieving his wife, he became the target of “unscrupulous businessmen, sycophants and opportunists.” The suit alleged that Jerardo Olivarez was using Stan’s money to enrich himself.

He was born in Manhattan on December 28, 1922. He started working in comics in 1939 at the age of 17. One of his earliest assignments was refilling inkwells and erasing stray pencil marks.

In the 1960s, he and Jack created the Fantastic Four, their first time working together, which began a new era for the publisher.

Fans, friends, and those who’ve worked with Marvel have been sending out their respects on social media.

Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, wrote, “There will never be another Stan Lee. For decades he provided both young and old with adventure, escape, comfort, confidence, inspiration, strength, friendship and joy. He exuded love and kindness and will leave an indelible mark on so, so, so many lives. Excelsior!!” Excelsior — which means “ever upward” — was how Stan signed off his monthly Marvel columns.

Robert Downey Jr., whose career was revitalized when he was cast as Iron-Man, posted a photo with Stan on Instagram and wrote, “I owe it all to you… Rest In Peace Stan…”

Actress Letitia Wright, who starred in Black Panther tweeted, “Rest in Peace Stan Lee ?.”

Rosario Dawson, who stars on Daredevil, wrote, “Overwhelmed with love and gratitude for the late, great hero, Stan Lee. Rest In Paradise. Thank you for your imagination, creativity, tenacity, inspiration and love!!!”

Actor Sebastian Stan wrote on Instagram, “Thank you great legend. You will be missed. I wouldn’t be here without you. ❤️??❤️”

Hugh Jackman, who played Wolverine for over a decade, wrote, “We’ve lost a creative genius. Stan Lee was a pioneering force in the superhero universe. I’m proud to have been a small part of his legacy and …. to have helped bring one of his characters to life.” Deadpool‘s Ryan Reynolds also tweeted his condolences.
