Ben Affleck is finally speaking out about his rehab drama. The Justice League actor posted a lengthy, emotional statement to his Instagram about his recent struggles with alcohol addiction. Ex-wife Jennifer Garner drove him back to rehab after a relapse, and he’s been spotted sporadically throughout the last few weeks in Los Angeles.
Ben, 46, began by writing, “This week I completed a forty day stay at a treatment center for alcohol addiction and remain in outpatient care.” It’s one of the few times he’s spoken openly about being an alcoholic.
“The support I have received from my family, colleagues and fans means more to me than I can say. It’s given me the strength and support to speak about my illness with others,” the Oscar winner continued. That echoed words of support his brother Casey Affleck gave last month.
“Battling any addiction is a lifelong and difficult struggle. Because of that, one if never really in or out of treatment. It is a full-time commitment. I am fighting for myself and my family.” He was spotted on Sunday with Jen and their kids, Violet, Seraphina, and Samuel, at church.
He thanked fans who’ve opened up about their struggles as well. “So many people have reached out on social media and spoken about their own journeys with addiction. To those people, I want to say thank you. Your strength is inspiring and is supporting me in ways I didn’t think was possible. It helps to know I am not alone. As I’ve had to remind myself, if you have a problem, getting help is a sign of courage, not weakness of failure.”
He concluded writing, “With acceptance and humility, I continue to avail myself with the help of so many people and I am grateful to all those who are there for me. I hope down the road I can offer an example to other who are struggling.”
It’s not known what’s next for Ben as he continues treatment. He’s been linked to 22-year-old Playboy model Shauna Sexton after breaking up with girlfriend Lindsay Shookus. He and Jen, 46, aren’t officially divorced yet, though she recently filed papers to speed up the process.
