Houston, we have a problem. Gwyneth Paltrow had NASA seeing stars when her lifestyle website Goop began hawking wearable stickers by Body Vibes ($120 for a pack of 24) that “promote healing” and are made with “the same conductive carbon material [used] to line spacesuits so [NASA] can monitor an astronaut’s vitals.”
While a rep for NASA quickly refuted the brand’s claim, former chief scientist Mark Shelhamer took it one step further. “Wow. What a load of BS this is. Not only is the whole premise like snake oil, the logic doesn’t even hold up,” he said, adding that even if carbon material was used, it would be to strengthen the suit, not monitor vital signs.
Goop has since apologized, but this may not be the last time Gwyn’s penchant for pseudoscience lands them in hot water. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the actress openly admitted: “I don’t know what the f**k we talk about!”
