E’Dena Hines, Morgan Freeman‘s 33-year-old granddaughter, was found unresponsive close to her Manhattan apartment on August 16, after being stabbed in the chest 16 times.

The man taken into custody as a suspect for her death was said to be in a relationship with Hines, according to New York police. Authorities found boyfriend, Lamar Davenport, 30, standing over Hines’ body, exclaiming Bible verses and exorcism incantations, reported the Washington Post. Witnesses claim they heard Davenport yelling ‘God has arisen’ and ‘Devil, be gone, Jesus and God.’

The aspiring actress (who recently returned to New York City to work on an independent film called Landing Up) was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital, while Davenport was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center for a psychological diagnosis. He will be charged with second-degree murder for the death of Hines.

A brokenhearted Morgan Freeman gave a statement about the death of his granddaughter:

“The world will never know her artistry and talent, and how much she had to offer. Her friends and family were fortunate enough to have known what she meant as a person. Her star will continue to shine bright in our hearts, thoughts and prayers. May she rest in peace.”
