Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are typically press-shy, but ever since OK! revealed the celebrity couple have all but called it quits on their marriage, the two are now trying to go out more together. But there’s still something off about the situation… like Jennifer’s forced smile and Ben’s glum expression.

“He is always glowering, and she tries to smile, putting a brave face on everything,” says a source. But when the paparazzi aren’t around, Jen, 43, “is absolutely miserable.”

It looks like Ben, 42, is the same way, but he has a harder time hiding it—or he isn’t bothering to. “As usual, they aren’t on the same page,” says the source. Between Ben’s rumored affairs, their very different personalities (Jen’s more of a homebody; Ben likes to roam) and Ben’s gambling, the couple’s number of issues has driven a wedge in their relationship. But they continue to remain devoted to their children Violet, 9, Seraphina, 6, and Samuel, 3—which came to light on June 10 during their family outing.

Ben and Jen were out shopping with their daughter Seraphina and her friend, along with an attractive blonde assistant in sky-high heels.

“It was a bizarre situation,” says an eyewitness. “Ben looked really upset, like he didn’t want to be there, and he was paying more attention to the leggy blonde than to his wife. He spoke mostly to her and barely made eye contact with Jen.”
When their shopping adventure ended, the couple left separately—a car picked Jen up, while Ben went off with the kids and the assistant.

“They didn’t even say good-bye to each other!” adds the onlooker.

Jen’s plan behind these outings together? “Make everything look amicable—She doesn’t want people to feel sorry for her,” says the insider. “But it’s obvious that they’re both unhappy.”
