Lions, sharks and beach balls — oh my! Sporting a high ponytail and flame encrusted costume, Katy Perry took to the stage at the Super Bowl this past Sunday for an explosive and memorable halftime performance.
Riding onto the filed atop a giant mirrored animatronic lion, the 30-year-old singer belted out her hit “Roar” as she whipped reigns and roared like a lion herself, holding extra tight as the beast reared back on its hind legs toward the end of the song.
After maneuvering a chess board full of dancing pieces while singing her mellow 2013 banger, “Dark Horse,” the sexy songstress engaged in a little bump and grind with Lenny Kravitz, as they launched into a short but sweet co-ed version of “I Kissed a Girl.”
For the PG set, Katy didn’t disappoint, as she joined dancing, singing sharks, beach balls and surfboards for a bright, rainbow rendition of “Teenage Dream.” Unfortunately, Snoop Dogg didn’t join her onstage for their duet, “California Gurls,” but he jokingly tweeted, “If you were wondering that was me in tha Shark costume!!”
Missy Elliott’s not-so-secret entrance was a powerhouse addition to Katy’s set, as she energized the crowd with her own classics “Get Your Freak On,” “Work It,” and “Lose Control,” dancing and gyrating her way right back into relevance.
Katy closed with her mega-hit “Firework,” for the big finale — and boy, was it ever! Waring a gown dripping in 3D stars, she circled high above the audience, attached to a shooting star while fireworks exploded around her.
Celebrity praise for the 30-year-old’s colorful performance poured in afterward: Britney Spears tweeted,” That half-time show! @katyperry you rocked it!” and Ryan Seacrest chimed in, “OK we need another halftime to recover from @katyperry’s halftime show. #slayed #SuperBowl.” And Anna Kendrick summed up the most important virtues of the night’s festivities the best, when she wrote, “All jokes aside, @katyperry your voice tonight was actually unreal. So were your boobs.”
