Even before she “consciously uncoupled” from Chris Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow was no stranger to being in a high-profile relationship — in the 90s, the actress was engaged to Brad Pitt, and then she dated Ben Affleck for three years. During an interview on Howard Stern’s radio show Wednesday, the Mortedecai actress dishes about her relationships with both superstar studs.
“I definitely fell in love with him,” she gushed of Angelina Jolie’s now-husband. “He was so gorgeous and sweet — I mean, he was Brad Pitt!” But it was Gwyn’s dad who was most upset when she pulled the plug on the relationship. “My father was so devastated when we broke up,” she added. “My father loved him like a son.”
So, what went wrong for the couple? “I was such a kid,” she explained. “I mean, I was 22 when we met. It’s taken me until, like, 40 to get my head out of my ass. You can’t make that decision when you’re 22 years old. I was a kid and I wasn’t ready. He was too good for me. I honestly do think I was just too young and I didn’t know what I was doing.”
And, these days, they’re on good terms. “If I see him, we’re friendly,” she stated. “But I don’t, like, hang out with him.”
As for her relationship with Ben, Gwyneth says the breakup happened because he simply wasn’t ready for a girlfriend at the time. “[My parents] appreciated how he’s super intelligent and he’s really, really talented and he’s funny,” she revealed. “But he wasn’t in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend, so I think, they loved him, but they were okay with us being apart.”
She added that she also maintains a friendly relationship with the Batman vs. Superman star, and is even friends his wife, Jennifer Garner. “I love her!” she gushed.
Oh, and that “consciously uncoupling” newsletter she wrote to announce her separation from the Coldplay singer last year? Surprisingly, Gwyneth doesn’t stand by the strange term. “I made a mistake,” she admitted. “I didn’t give it context. But it is a goofy term.”
