Hollywood insiders were shocked when, on Dec. 12, Angelina Jolie pulled out of all press appearances for her much-anticipated film Unbroken. The actress claimed chicken pox was the reason behind her decision, “I will be home itching and missing everyone, and I can’t believe it because this film means so much to me.”
But it was hard not to notice the timing. Just four days earlier, Brad Pitt’s wife suffered a humiliation far more uncomfortable than chicken pox when the Sony hackers released an email exchange between Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin — in which the Oscar winner was the unfortunate star.
Livid over Angelina’s insistence on having director David Fincher direct her in-development film Cleopatra — instead of his as-yet-unmade Steve Jobs movie — Rudin called the actress a “minimally talented spoiled brat,” in the exchange, as well as a “camp event celebrity and that’s all.” With no pushback from Pascal, the producer huffed, “The last thing anybody needs is to make a giant bomb with her that any fool could see coming.”
Ouch! Angelina was “fuming” over the emails, an insider says. But as “rude and tasteless” as she found Rudin’s words, it was Pascal’s silence that angered her more. The two women had been quite close in the past — with Pascal bringing Angelina on board to star in the hit 2010 film Salt — and that made the executive’s lack of support feel all more like a betrayal.
“It was a slap in the face, because Amy was somebody Angelina allowed into her world,” an insider explains. “Angie is used to being scrutinized, but this was much worse. She’s the type of person who will banish someone from her life if they disrespect her. In Angie’s eyes, Pascal isn’t worth her time anymore.”
One day after the hackers leaked the email exchange, Amy tried to make nice with the actress at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Power 100 breakfast…but in a now-viral photo of the pair, it’s clear Angie has no interest in playing nice!
