Five albums later and there still seems to be a highly-publicized fascination with which exes Taylor Swift’s songs are about! In a new interview, the singer fires back at critics who are only able to focus on the fact that she writes about love.

“I think, frankly, that’s a very sexist angle to take,” she admits. “No one says that about Ed Sheeran, no one says it about Bruno Mars. They’re all writing songs about their exes, their current girlfriends, their love life — and no one raises a red flag!”

Still, the 24-year-old says she’s figured out why there’s still such an obsession with her songwriting techniques. “My first album came out when I was 16, so I would write about my life as a I saw it and as I felt it,” she explains. “Then, what happens is, as you get more successful, which you’re lucky if that happens, you have more and more people paying attention to what you’ve been doing. And you’ve been doing it the same way your entire career, but all of a sudden the perspective has changed.”

So far, Taylor has released two songs (“Shake It Off” and “Out of the Woods”) from her upcoming album 1989. On Monday night, “Welcome to New York” will be available on iTunes, and on Oct. 27, the entire album will finally debut!
