8 Pairs of Costars Who Had Trouble Working Together

Kiefer freddie

Freddie Prinze Jr. only worked on 24 for one season…but it was enough time for him to deem costar Kiefer Sutherland as “unprofessional.” So much so, in fact, that he says the experience almost caused him to quit acting!

But the 38-year-old isn’t the only one who had difficulty working with a fellow star on set — here’s 7 more pairs who also didn’t always see eye-to-eye:

Blake Lively & Leighton Meester

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - September 21, 2010

They played on-again, off-again best friends for six years of Gossip Girl…but in real life, they were nothing more than work acquaintances. The ladies shot down rumors of a feud throughout the series’ run, but never flat-out denied that they weren’t exactly pals.

“Blake and Leighton have never been best friends and never professed to be,” Blake’s rep once said. “Blake goes to work, does her job and goes home.” In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Leighton explained, “We don’t hang out often.”

Jason Patric & Ashley Judd

Jason would be the first to admit that he didn’t like working with his Broadway costar (he and Ashley starred in 2003’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof).

“I didn’t like my leading lady,” he told OK! Magazine. “Ashley is just a lazy and arrogant actress. Let’s just leave it at that.”

Alyssa Milano & Shannen Doherty

Alyssa Milano Shannen Doherty And Holly Marie Combs Star In Charmed

Although Alyssa said Charmed was the “best job I ever had in my life,” things weren’t always so peachy between the show’s trio of ladies. In July of last year, the actress appeared on Watch What Happens Live!, and discussed Shannen’s leaving the show.

“We never really found out what happened,” she explained. “I can tell you that we were on the air with her for three years, and there were definitely some rough days. Holly [Marie Combs] and Shannen were best friends for ten years before the show started, so it was very much sort of like high school. I would hope that in our thirties it wouldn’t be like that anymore.”

Bill Murray & Lucy Liu

Drew Barrymore In 'Charlie's Angels'

While they were filming Charlie’s Angels, it was reported that Bill flat out stopped a scene just to tell his costar she couldn’t act — which she allegedly responded to by throwing a punch! When asked about the feud later on, Bill certainly didn’t deny anything.

“Look, I will dismiss you completely if you are unprofessional and working with me,” he told The New York Times. “When our relationship is professional and you’re not getting that done, forget it.”

Leonardo DiCaprio & Claire Danes

Claire Danes And Leonardo DiCaprio In 'Romeo + Juliet'

There were constant rumors that Leo and Claire were feuding on the set of Romeo & Juliet, which they did a fairly good job at dispelling, by praising each other once filming wrapped. However, Claire did admit to problems with her now A-list costar.

“We have one of the most complicated relationships in history,” she told British Vogue, sidestepping the question of whether or not she was fighting with Leo. “We wouldn’t talk to each other during long periods during filming, and then we’d die together, or do something huge like that. It was very confusing.”

Will Smith & Janet Hubert

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Before getting fired from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Janet played Will’s Aunt Vivian, but after she left, she didn’t have much nice to say about her on-screen family. “There will never be a reunion….” she told TMZ in 2011. “As I will never work with an a—— like Will Smith. He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word.”

Later on, she did add, though, that she would be willing to reconcile with the Fresh Prince.

Ryan Gosling & Rachel McAdams

12th Annual Critics' Choice Awards - Arrivals

They went on to date for three years after they finished filming The Notebook, but when things started out, they weren’t so great between these two! In a recent interview, tied with the film’s tenth anniversary, director Nick Cassavetes revealed what really went down behind the scenes.

“They were really not getting along one day on set. Really not,” he said of the former couple. “And Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick. Come here.’ And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.’ We went into a room with a producer and they started screaming and yelling at each other.”

Clearly, things cooled off eventually, but given their romantic history, Ryan and Rachel probably won’t be jumping the gun to work together again anytime soon!
