These days, Angelina Jolie is a proud mom of six, working as an actress and director while raising a family with fiance, Brad Pitt. But in a new interview with Elle, she admitted that that lifestyle wasn’t always in the cards for her.
“I never thought I’d have children,” she told the mag. “I never thought I’d be in love. I never thought I’d meet the right person. Having come from a broken home, you kind of accept that certain things feel like a fairytale and you just don’t look for them.”
Indeed, before settling down, the actress was a bit of a wild child. Her 20’s, she said, “misinterpreted as [me] wanting to be rebellious. And, in fact, it wasn’t a need to be destructive or rebellious — it’s that need to find a full voice, to push open the walls around you. You want to be free.”
Angelina famously met Brad on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2005, while he was still married to Jennifer Aniston. “You get together and you’re two individuals and you’re inspired by each other,” she explained, of the relationship. “You challenge each other, you complement each other, drive each other beautifully crazy. After all these years, we have history, and when you have history with somebody, you’re friends in such a very real, deep way that there’s such a comfort and an ease and a deep love that comes from having been through quite a lot together.”
Now, the 38-year-old stars alongside her daughter, Vivienne, in the film Maleficent — but don’t expect a permanent spot for her children on the big screen. “Brad and I made the decision that we wouldn’t keep them from the sets and the fun of making movies, but we wouldn’t [glorify it either],” she admitted. “We wouldn’t make it a good or bad thing. But I would really prefer they do something else. After two days of it, Brad and I were so stressed, we never wanted to do it again!”
