It’s been nearly five years since Natasha Richardson’s unexpected death, and the memory still haunts her husband Liam Neeson. In a 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper, airing Sun., Feb. 23, the actor opens up about the loss, as well as his decision to take his wife off life support.
“[Her death] was never real,” he admits. “It still kind of isn’t. There’s periods now in our New York residence when I hear the door opening, especially the first couple of years…anytime I hear that door opening, I still think I’m going to see her.”
Natasha was put on life support after she hit her head in a skiing accident in Canada. “I went into her and I just told her I loved her,” the 61-year-old explains. “I said, ‘Sweetie, you’re not coming back from this. You’ve banged your head.'”
“She and I made a pact,” he continues. “If any of us got into a vegetative state, we’d pull the plug. So, when I saw her and saw all these tubes and stuff, that was my immediate thought. I said, ‘These tubes have to go. She’s gone.'” The actress donated her heart, kidneys and liver. “I think she would be very thrilled and pleased by that,” Liam adds.
