Three years ago, Demi Lovato spent time in rehab for “personal” issues, which she later revealed included an eating disorder and drug use. Earlier this week, Star broke the story that her BFF Selena Gomez completed a two-week stint at a treatment facility herself earlier this month.

In an interview with E! News, the “Skyscraper” singer kept fairly tight-lipped about her longtime friend’s personal matters, but did offer a message of support. “Selena is, I’ve known her for 14 years and we’ve been best friends,” she said. “That’s all of her business, and I just want to let her do her thing. And…yeah. She’s amazing, I love her.”

Recently, Demi has made it a point to open up about the disease of addiction, particularly following Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death of an apparent heroin overdose. “I wish more people would lose the stigma and treat addiction as the deadly and serious DISEASE that it is,” she tweeted. “Drugs are not something to glamorize in pop music or film to portray as harmless recreational fun.” She continued with a lengthy message, which she concluded by honoring the late actor.

During her interview with E!, the 21-year-old expanded on why she felt her message was necessary. “It’s just important for me, for people to see that it’s not…when you’re a drug addict…that it’s not your fault,” she explained. “It’s not even a conscious decision. When you’re in your disease, you do things impulsively. You don’t think forward.”

She added, “Don’t blame Philip Seymour Hoffman for taking so much, or whatever it was. It’s a really hard thing to control and I definitely don’t think it was his fault.”
