Zac Efron on Addiction Admission: "It Was a Weight Off My Chest"

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

It took Zac Efron nearly a year to open up about his time in rehab last Spring, but now that he’s done so, the actor says he’s doing better than ever. The 26-year-old recently dished about his addiction to drugs and alcohol in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, and while promoting his movie Neighbors on the TODAY show, he explained how it felt to make that big revelation.

“It was a weight off my chest,” he admitted. “It was great. It was a fantastic time, and you know, it was a rough year. It’s kind of funny — Neighbors was such a great sort of icing on the cake for all of this. I was able to kind of channel all of that and put it into this movie. I feel great. I feel really blessed to be here working with this group of guys. It couldn’t be better right now.”

Zac sat down for the interview alongside costar, Dave Franco, who praised his friend for his work in the upcoming comedy. “I’m really excited for Zac because I feel like a lot of people have this kind of preconception about who he is, and once you see this movie, I think his teenybopper image is going to be completely shattered,” Dave gushed. “All these new projects that wouldn’t have come to him otherwise are just going to flood toward him.”

Check out the interview above to hear what Zac and Dave had to say about working with Seth Franco on the movie, out May 9.
