Innocence Lost

Jay Z & Harvey Weinstein Present The Kalief Browder Story On Spike

A startling look at the criminal justice system and the brutal torture of a child.

In May 2010, 16-year-old Kalief Browder was arrested on suspicion of stealing a backpack. Maintaining his innocence, he was told by authorities that he would be going home. Instead, he spent 1000 days in Riker’s Island prison — 800 in solitary confinement — without ever being convicted.

In a new, Sundance-acclaimed series entitled Time: The Kalief Browder StoryShawn “Jay Z” Carter and The Weinstein Company explore the imprisonment of Kalief at Rikers, where he was tortured, starved, and encouraged to commit suicide, which he ultimate did years later in 2015.

Through thousands of hours of footage and interviews, including sit-downs with politicians, activists and the Browder family, the series uncovers the tragic consequences of a severely broken criminal justice system, and how one arrest can destroy a family.

The final episode of the six-part series, Time: The Kalief Browder Story airs April 5th on Spike TV.
