During Caitlin Jenner's recent visit to New York City, she was seen in the company of Candis Cayne, the gorgeous transgender actress. Candis has a handful of Hollywood film and TV roles to her credit but she's better known as a singer and entertainer on NYC's gay nightclub circuit. Insiders tell Star that she and Caitlyn felt an immediate attraction for each other after meeting — and, just like the Olympic gold medalist, Candis used to be a man!

Born Brendan McDanniel in Maui, Hawaii, Candis attended Henry Perrine Baldwin High School, where she was active in theater groups. After graduating in 1989, she briefly moved to Los Angles to study dance before relocating to NYC, where she performed in drag before beginning hormone treatment and, ultimately, undergoing gender reassignment surgery. "Ever since I was a child, I felt mentally more female," says Candis.

After returning home one night, she recalls, "I was unhappy, and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I sat in front of a mirror and looked at myself, and I realized that I wanted to grow as a woman not as a man." She began her transition the very next day, starting with hormone therapy consisting of estrogen shots and pills.

"Candis is an icon in the LBGT (lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender) community, and Caitlyn has known about and admired her for years," says Caitlyn's friend. "I'm not surprised at all that she would jump at the chance for them to spend some quality time together. And I'm sure Candis feels the same way about Caitlyn."

Despite public speculation that Caitlyn may not be "complete," sources say she has, in fact, undergone total gender-reassignment surgery.
