Kim Kardashian West, 36, was spotted texting while driving in Los Angeles Friday. The reality star was photographed plainly using her smart phone while behind the wheel of her silver Range Rover. Driving while using a handheld device has been against the law in the state of California since 2009 and carries a $20 base fine for a first offense. Repeat offenders are hit with a $50 base fine. Including assessments, first violations generally run over $150 and additional offenses can cost in excess of $250.

Maybe Kim isn’t concerned about the fines. Forbes magazine estimated her net worth to be about $45.5 million as of June 9. Still, the mother-of-two should be more careful when it comes to her safety and the safety of others on the road. According to the Center For Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 9 people lose their lives each day in the U.S. in crashes that involve a distracted driver.

With studies indicating a rise in addiction to smart phone usage, Kim is hardly alone. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that at any given time during daytime hours about 660,000 U.S. drivers are handling electronic devices, including smart phones, while driving. This can result in a driver being three times more likely to be in an accident.

This is not the first time Kim’s been caught texting while driving. In fact, she and other members of her famous family have been photographed previously using their smart phones while behind the wheel. What do you think about Kim’s refusal to follow the law? Is her reckless behavior evidence of a smart phone addiction? Let us know what you think in the comments section or tweet us @star_news.com.
