O.J. Simpson was released from a Nevada prison early Sunday morning after serving 9 years for kidnapping and armed robbery. The Juice had been sentenced to 33 years for the 2007 incident but the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners unanimously agreed to release the former NFL player. O.J. was reportedly set free shortly after midnight in order to avoid a media frenzy. He left through the front door carrying several boxes of belongings and got into a car with an unidentified driver.

O.J. Simpson was a national sports icon, spokesperson, and actor who fell from grace after being accused of murdering his ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman in 1994. The subsequent ‘Trial of the Century” resulted in an acquittal that caused a spotlight to be shined on how race and celebrity play a role in how crimes are investigated and tried in the U.S.

The families of the victims won a wrongful death civil suit and the former athlete was ordered to pay $33.5 million. It’s unlikely that he will ever pay that debt. For now O.J.will be focusing on following the conditions of his parole that include staying away from known criminals and convicted felons. O.J.must also refrain from possession of any drugs or guns. He may not drink alcohol to excess and will be subject to blood and breath tests to confirm that he is not abusing substances.

Spokesperson for the Nevada Department of Corrections Brooke Keast said, “I told him, ‘Don’t come back,’ and he responded, ‘I don’t intend to.’ He was upbeat, personable and seemed happy to get on with his life.” A friend of O.J.’s revealed that he is hoping to move to Florida eventually in order to be closer to two of his children. O.J.’s other two children live in California and Georgia. For now though, he will be residing in a Las Vegas suburb with a friend and spending a fair amount of time with his parole officer.
