Kristin Cavallari has been pretty vocal over the last few years about the lack of authenticity on her former MTV reality shows The Hills and Laguna Beach, but in a new interview, she reveals how emotional the whole process really was.

“We had no idea what we were doing,” the mom of two says in her Oprah: Where Are They Now? interview. “We were just going along with whatever MTV was telling us to do.”

For the first season of Laguna Beach, that meant a love triangle between Kristin, boyfriend Stephen Colletti, and TV enemy Lauren Conrad. “My boyfriend at the time would take Lauren Conrad to dinner and buy her flowers, which never would have happened if it weren’t for the show and MTV,” she explains. “I felt very used and manipulated.”

With Lauren as the show’s protagonist, the now 27-year-old became the obvious villain. “Being 16, 17 in high school, not knowing really how to handle your emotions or even realizing what’s going on, I put up a wall,” Kristin admits. “I put up a really tough exterior because I felt like they were really trying to take advantage of me.” And, looking back, she isn’t thrilled with her bad-girl portrayal. “When I saw it air and saw the way that they represented me, I was really really upset,” she shares. “I cried for hours and hours after I saw the first episode.”

“I still to this day think you should be 18 to do a reality show,” Kristin concludes. “Only because of my experience.”
