Richard Gere's Divorce: It's Getting Nasty!

As a self-proclaimed Buddhist of more than 40 years, Richard Gere is known for his low-key attitude. But when the actor headed to his first divorce hearing with Carey Lowell in October, he was clearly itching for a fight.

After jabbing his umbrella at waiting photographers, sources say he stormed into the Manhattan courthouse and sulked when his soon-to-be-ex-wife ignored him.

The Time Out of Mind star has good reason to be on edge, though. Sources reveal that Carey plans to demand nearly half of Richard’s $250 million fortune — and won’t rest until she gets at least $100 million! “She wanted to stay married and keep their family together,” says an insider, “but when Richard didn’t, she decided to take him to the cleaners.”

The former Law & Order actress, who put her career on hold to raise their son, Homer, feels like whatever Richard earned during their 11-year marriage, they earned together. But the silver fox, who reportedly raked in $82 million in 2013 alone, isn’t willing to part with any of it. “It’s ugly,” admits the pal. “And it’s only going to get worse.”

Carey also seems to be seeking revenge for her ex’s rumored wandering eye. In 2012, a report claimed Richard hit on a married woman at a restaurant. Worse yet, the following year he was said to have propositioned one of Carey’s good friends. And while Richard’s rep denied the stories, they were humiliating for Care — who’d ignored talk years ago that he’d cheated on her with his Unfaithful costar Diane Lane.

For now, the duo are avoiding any unnecessary interaction. “No amount of money could compensate for the embarrassment Carey’s endured,” divulges the source. “They only speak when it involved their son. Otherwise, they can’t stand to be in the same room together.”
