Taylor Swift Talks "Out of the Woods" -- Which Ex is It About?!

On Tuesday, Taylor Swift will release the second song from her highly-anticipated album 1989. While she’s made it clear that “Out of the Woods” is not her next single, the 24-year-old is publicly proud of the song about one of her previous relationships.

“”Out of the Woods” is one of my favorite songs on this album because one of the goals I set out to accomplish when I went to make this album was I wanted to make sure these songs sounded exactly the way the emotions felt when I felt them,” she explained on Good Morning America. “This song is about the fragility and breakable nature of some relationships. This was a relationship where I was kind of living day to day wondering where it was going, if it was going to go anywhere, if it was going to end the next day. It was a relationship where you kind of never feel like you’re standing on solid ground.”

In her Rolling Stone interview from September, she opened up even more about the song, revealing it was about a time she and an ex had to go to the hospital after he crashed the snowmobile they were riding. Harry Styles is rumored to be the subject, although, as usual, Taylor never confirmed the speculation.

The singer and boy bander split after dating for just a few months at the end of 2012. It doesn’t seem they’ve remained close since the break up, but “Out of the Woods” is about Harry, there’s not all bad blood there.

“That kind of feeling brings on excitement but also extreme anxiety,” she continued of the track. “And kind of a frantic feeling of wondering…endless questions. This song sounds exactly like that frantic feeling of anxiety and questioning, but it stresses that even if a relationship is breakable and fragile and full of anxiety, it doesn’t mean that it isn’t worthwhile, exciting, beautiful and all the things that we look for.”

Jack Antonoff of the band .fun cowrote the song.
