Matt Damon Uses Toilet Water to Complete ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

He’s just one of dozens of celebrities who’ve taken part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but Matt Damon brought awareness to more than one cause in his video for the viral campaign.

Taking a different approach than probably any other person to complete this challenge (which raises awareness for ALS), the actor opted to dump a bucket of toilet water on his head — and he had two very good reasons.

“It posed kind of a problem for me, not only because there’s a drought here in California, but because I cofounded Water.org and we envision a day when everybody has access to a clean drink of water because there are about 800 million people in the world that don’t,” Matt explains in his video. “So dumping a clean bucket of water on my head seems a little crazy.”

Of course, he knew the decision might gross some people out, but elaborated on why it’s actually not so bad. “For those of you, like my wife, who think this is really disgusting — keep in mind that the water in our toilets in the West is actually cleaner than the water that most people in the developing world have access to,” he says. “So as disgusting as this may seem, hopefully it’ll highlight that this is a big problem and together we can do something about it.”

After dumping the toilet-water-and-ice-filled bucket on his head, Matt nominated George Clooney, Bono and Tom Brady for the challenge.
