Robin Thicke’s entire new album is about his wife Paula Patton, who he separated from in February, but he still has a lot to say. The singer sat down for an interview with New York’s Hot 97, and told all about where his relationship’s at with the actress…and what went wrong.
Despite several public pleas to win Paula back, the 37-year-old said of his ex, “I haven’t seen her for four months.” But that doesn’t mean things are completely sour between the two. “We’re cool, she’s the best girl in the world,” he gushed. “She’s a great mother and still a great friend. But because we weren’t together anymore and I still have so much I wanted to apologize for and things I wanted to take responsibility for..that’s pretty much what the album’s for. But I also wanted to wish her well and let her know that she’s a great person and she deserves to have a good life, so it’s not all a negative album.”
The “Get Her Back” singer added that his album Paula is “exactly what happens when you lose the love of your life and you try to figure it out in your head.” And although the songs are messages to his estranged wife…she hasn’t heard it yet. “She’s only heard a few songs,” he admitted. “And I don’t think she wants to hear it right now. I can’t speak for her, but I think space is an important part of the healing process.”
Robin then dished on what happened to make the relationship end, which he revealed was entirely his fault. Still, despite rumors, he denied cheating. “That’s not why we’re apart,” he said. “We’re apart just because we couldn’t be together for a little while. There’s a hundred different reasons, there isn’t just one. There’s a long list. I changed and I got a little too selfish and a little too greedy and a little too full of myself.”
But has he changed? “You lose your family,” he concluded, “that’ll slow you down.”
