Neil Patrick Harris Reveals He Turned Down Late Night Hosting Gig

Nph

Nightly late show host isn’t in Neil Patrick Harris’ future job description…but it could’ve been! During an interview with Howard Stern, the actor revealed that CBS approached him about taking over Dave Letterman or Craig Ferguson’s spots on The Late Show and The Late, Late Show, respectively.

Unfortunately for NPH fans, that kind of commitment just wasn’t in the cards for the How I Met Your Mother star. “I told him the things that concerned me about the longevity about that kind of gig,” he explained. “I think I would get bored of the repetition fast, and the structure of it is so set. I don’t have any interest in doing monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest, musical act, goodnight.”

But that doesn’t mean Neil wanted his relationship with the network to be over completely. In fact, he pitched his own idea to CBS, which, he added, may still be in the works. “I like a weekly variety show idea,” he admitted. “I think if it’s weekly and people really want to see it and there’s a lot of great s— on there, then you’re going to get the guests to want to come onto your thing.”

As for the late show replacements, Stephen Colbert will replace Dave, and it’s rumored that Joel McHale may be taking over for Craig.
