For the first time, Julia Roberts has opened up about her half-sister, Nancy Motes’, tragic suicide. The Glee production assistant allegedly left a suicide note, in which she reportedly alluded to her estrangement from her famous family member, but Julia still teared up when discussing the unfortunate situation.

“It’s just a heartbreak,” she told WSJ Magazine, in a newly-released interview conducted on March 1. “It’s only been 20 days. There aren’t words to explain what any of us have been through in these last 20 days. It’s hour by hour some days, but you just keep looking ahead.”

The August: Osage County star did not address any suicide note reports in the interview, but did note that the death was hard for her to talk about. “You don’t want anything bad to happen to anyone, but there are so many tragic, painful, inexplicable things in the world,” she added. “But, [as with] any situation of challenge and despair, we must find a way, as a family. It’s so hard to formulate a sentence about it outside the weepy huddle of my family.”

Since the Academy Awards on March 2, Julia has had the time to grieve with her family. Next, she’ll star in HBO’s adaptation of The Normal Heart, premiering May 25.
