LISTEN: Lea Michele's Song About Losing Cory Monteith

Cory Monteith was undoubtedly the inspiration between most, if not all, the songs off Lea Michele’s upcoming album Louder, but one specific song hits home the most for the singer. In an interview released earlier this week, the 27-year-old revealed that, along with her first single “Cannonball,” she added “If You Say So” to the album following her boyfriend’s drug overdose.

“It’s the only song that no one’s heard,” she admitted. “I can’t talk about it until people hear it. I just feel like people should hear it and I don’t know if I’m ever going to talk about it. It’s just one of those things where I understand what it means and you can take it or leave it. The song is for me.”

The song is definitely personal, outlining the emotions Lea felt seven days after Cory’s unexpected death in July. “I can’t believe it’s true/I keep looking for you/I check my phone/and wait to hear from you in a crowded room,” she sings. The song also alludes to the fact that the couple had plans for a future together. “I thought we would grow old,” she adds.

While “If You Say So” is a perfect tribute to her lost love, “Cannonball” tells the story of how she overcame the grief that came after his passing. Another late addition to the album was “You’re Mine,” which also depicts her love for Cory, but without specific memories like this new release.

Louder comes out on March 4.
