Woody Allen is continuing to deny claims that he sexually abused his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, when she was a child. On Tuesday, the famous director’s lawyer, Elkin Abramowitz, appeared on the TODAY show with a response to Dylan’s open letter regarding the situation.

“His reaction is one of overwhelming sadness because of what has happened to Dylan,” Elkin said, on behalf of the 78-year-old. “She was a pawn in a huge fight between him and Mia Farrow years ago.”

In fact, abuse allegations began in the early 90’s, during a custody battle between Woody and the actress. Eventually, an investigation concluded that no sexual abuse had taken place, and the charges were dropped. “The idea that she was molested was implanted in her by her mother,” Elkin explained. “That memory is never going to go away. The fact that she says this now, that it happened 20 years ago, is totally understandable.”

Woody’s lawyer continued to point out that the story in Dylan’s open letter was formed from what Mia had told her as a child. “In my view, she’s not lying,” he revealed. “She truly believes this happened…that’s what the vice of this is. When you implant a story in a fragile, 7-year-old’s mind…it stays there forever. It never goes away.”

Elkin concluded by reiterating the fact that Woody has already been determined as innocent, and in his mind, the case is completely over with. “Woody Allen is not interested in suing anyone for defamation,” he stated. “He was determined not to have molested his daughter 20 years ago. The case is over. There is no case. The fact that it’s being brought up now is suspect — the timing is suspect.”
