Evil has arrived — the currently untitled Man of Steel sequel has cast its Lex Luthor. Warner Bros. Pictures announced Friday that The Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg will be playing Superman’s villain in the film. Additionally, Jeremy Irons was cast Alfred, a confidant of Bruce Wayne (Batman).

The actors join Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck, who play Superman and Batman, respectively.

“Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940,” the film’s director, Zack Snyder, said. “What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character to some new and unexpected directions.”

A few months ago, it was rumored that Bryan Cranston would sign on to take the role of Lex.

The highly anticipated sequel was originally slated to hit theaters on July 17, 2015, but that date has been pushed back even further to May 6, 2016.
