For the second year in a row, Jennifer Lawrence is the golden girl of awards season. However, while the actress is certainly a favorite in the Best Supporting Actress category, there has also been much buzz surrounding newcomer Lupita Nyong’o from 12 Years a Slave.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave the win to J. Law at Sunday’s Golden Globes, but on Thursday, the Broadcast Film Critics Association made a different decision at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Lupita won this one, and gave an emotional and memorable acceptance speech.

“Thank you! I’m a little terrified,” she admitted. “I am honored to be here and I just want to thank the BFCA for this incredible honor. This has been an incredible year of excellent performances, and in my category, I feel so honored to be with the likes of June Squibb and Julia Roberts and Jennifer Lawrence and…Scarlett Johansson!”

Taking a page from Jennifer’s book, the newbie even sparked a chuckle from the audience. “Thank you to Julia for making my brother the coolest kid in  school by taking a picture with him,” she added.

By the end of her speech, Lupita teared up while thanking director Steve McQueen and her family. “Steve, your passion and your dedication and your smile inspired me every day on set and it continues to inspire me now,” she concluded. “I want to thank my team and my family for their support, and I’d like to dedicate this to my uncle — he didn’t live to see this day, but I’m sure he’s proud of me.”

The ladies will go up against one another again this weekend at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and on March 2 at the Academy Awards.
