Is The X-Factor done after just three seasons? Fox president Kevin Reilly admitted during the 2014 Winter TCA Press Tour on Monday that the show’s future is still uncertain.

Although Simon Cowell seems to think a Season 4 is imminent, Kevin revealed that the show’s ratings weren’t where the network imagined, and, right now, “there’s no decision” regarding a fourth season.

“I love [Simon],” he explained. “He’s doing what he should do as a producer, I think bullishly. Simon…I think would admit that the ratings were not what we had hoped.”

If the show does return next fall, Kevin said there will be changes. “It would not be in the current format we have,” he said, adding that he’s heard of some interesting ideas being tossed around.

In December, Demi Lovato announced she wouldn’t be returning for another season as a judge/mentor, and Simon agreed that “the rules will change” next time around. At the press tour, though, the Fox prez hinted that the show’s creator and future dad may be taking a lesser role. “He has a lot going on…he’s never going to be out of it, it’s his creation,” he shared. “What form that takes, whether he’s in it, whether he’s here every week, I don’t know.”

Kevin added that a decision would be made regarding everything within the next month. No word yet on Kelly Rowland or Paulina Rubio’s return.
