It has to be kind of awkward when you win an award for onscreen chemistry when you’ve been broken up in real life for eight months, right? Well, we had the chance to find out at the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday, when Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, who split in May 2013, won the “Best Chemistry” award for their relationship as Elena and Damon on The Vampire Diaries.
In a somewhat failed attempt to not make things awkward, the duo themselves, who were rumored to have started hooking up again, were the first to address the elephant in the room. “This is crazy,” Ian noted, while accepting the award. “Can you believe this is almost five years in the making?!”
“You know what’s even crazier though, Ian?” Nina responded. “At the beginning of the show, Elena actually hated Damon.” The exes then recalled what made their characters hate one another to begin with.
“And then we started dating on the show,” the actress added, with Ian noting, “And then we started dating in real life.”
Next, Ian pointed out that their characters are still dating on the show, despite the fact that they broke up offscreen. “It’s a good thing it’s not awkward!” Nina joked, as they shared uncomfortable expressions. “Well, it’s a good thing we have chemistry!”
They proved that, with the 35-year-old planting a kiss on his former girlfriend’s cheek. Watch the whole thing go down here:
