The Wolf of Wall Street tells the true story of a stock broker who spent most of his time dabbling in illegal activity. Still, some have criticized the film for glamorizing a wild lifestyle, a description which lead actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, has made a point to shoot down.

“The film may be misunderstood by some; I hope people understand that we’re not condoning this behavior, that we’re indicting it,” he told Variety. “The book was a cautionary tale, and if you sit through the end of the film, you’ll realize that what we’re saying about these people and this world, because it’s an intoxicating one.”

The 39-year-old also praised director Martin Scorcese for telling the story the way he did. “To get to work with Marty at this point in his career and to make a movie that takes lots of chances… People — no matter what their attitude is after seeing the film — should understand that this is a film that’s outside the box and is very difficult to get done in this day and age; it almost never happens. That in its own right is commendable. I’m proud that films like this can still somehow be made.”

Leo has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his role in the movie.
