When The Hills ended in 2010, show runners alluded to the idea that it had been scripted by having the finale conclude with Kristin Cavallari and Brody Jenner standing on a backlot. Since then, cast members have confirmed that the series wasn’t exactly a “reality,” and during an appearance on Bethenny airing Friday, the show’s “mean girl” went into further detail.
“I had fake relationships, fake fights. I don’t care anymore…it’s been so many years so I can tell you,” Kristin admitted.
The 26-year-old went onto explain a specific situation in which producers manipulated her storyline. “I dated Brody when I was 18…right after Laguna Beach, actually — and that’s it,” she said. “And then, on The Hills, they had us dating for…I think a few episodes. They pretended like him and [then-girlfriend] Jayde broke up and that I was dating Brody. And then Jayde and I got into this huge fight because she saw us at the club…which wasnt real at all. They were together the entire time.”
Kristin joined The Hills halfway through Season 5, after Lauren Conrad’s exit, but she starred on the show’s predecessor, Laguna Beach, in high school. “They are very much like soap operas,” she explained. “I look at them as two completely different shows. Laguna Beach — they just manipulated situations and put us in situations that we normally wouldn’t have been in. Or we’d have to film something that maybe happened a month ago or hasn’t happened yet. When I decided to join The Hills, I knew exactly what I was getting into…I knew exactly what character they wanted me to be.”
Of course, reality shows are a thing of the past for the mom and wife — she’s currently expecting her second child with husband Jay Cutler, and has said she doesn’t plan on documenting her life on television again.
