She’s only 17-years-old, but with an album that shot to the top of the charts, Lorde has no problem throwing shade at more established artists. She’s infamously dissed fellow popstars like Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, but regarding her recent comments towards Drake and Nicki Minaj, the New Zealand native is on the defense.
It all began when comments Lorde made in an interview with Complex magazine were allegedly misconstrued. “Around the middle of last year, I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as pop singers like Lana del Rey,” she told the mag. “They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn’t relate to me — or anyone I knew. I began thinking, ‘How are we listening to this? It’s completely irrelevant.'”
However, the singer clarified the comments herself on Twitter. “i have nothing but love and admiration for both nicki and drake (have said this x1000),” she wrote. “just because their songs aren’t my reality (being 17 and from auckland) doesn’t mean i don’t admire their musicianship and careers!”
Regardless, something tells me things could get a little awkward for Lorde when she starts attending American award shows…
