Becoming an actress completely changed Jennifer Lawrence’s life — and not just because it made her an Oscar-winning star. In a new interview with French magazine Madame Figaro, the Hunger Games star opened up about the social anxiety she faced before she started performing.

“My nickname was ‘Nitro,’ as in, nitroglycerin,” she revealed. “I was hyperactive, curious about everything. When my mother told me about my childhood, she always told me there was a light in me, a spark that inspired me constantly. When I entered school, the light went out. We never knew what it was, a kind of social anxiety.”

The issue got so bad, that Jennifer admitted she even had to seek therapy. “I went to see a shrink — nothing worked,” she said.

Then, she told the mag, she convinced her parents to help her make a change. “One day, I begged my parents to take me to casting,” she explained. “We went to New York and that’s where I started acting. Just on stage, my mother saw the change that was taking place in me. She saw my anxieties disappear.”
