The end of American Idol Season 12 couldn’t come fast enough for former judge Mariah Carey! In a new interview with Hot 97, the singer was brutally honest about what it was like working on the Fox show.
“Honestly, I hated it,” she admitted, adding, “I thought it was going to be a three-person panel. They gave me a nice, dangling monetary moment, and I was just like, ‘Okay. Randy Jackson will be there. I’ve known him forever. He used to play bass for me! Like, this isn’t a big deal. This will be nothing.’ But it wasn’t like that. It was like hell…It was like going to work every day in hell with Satan.”
The “Art of Letting Go” singer’s last comment was likely directed towards Nicki Minaj, who she sat with on the judges panel. The two got into on-camera arguments on more than one occasion, and it was clear that they weren’t besties.
After her candid comments, Mariah continued, “Nah, I’m just playing. It didn’t affect me that much. I was just disappointed.”
However, she did admit that she loved the talented contestants on the show, although she hated that there was circumstances where other judges wouldn’t put certain singers through for “political reasons.”
Still, don’t expect to see her on a reality singing competition anytime soon. “I like being in the studio better and going on my own tours, etc.,” she said. “So we’re going back to that.”
