Gia Allemand, who competed on Season 14 of The Bachelor, has tragically passed away. Sources close to the 29-year-old reality star say she chose to end her life by hanging herself.

“It just doesn’t make sense,” a close friend tells Star. “She was so sweet and beautiful, but obviously so unhappy inside. It’s tragic that she chose to hang herself.”

The model had been dating Ryan Anderson of the New Orleans Pelicans since February 2011 after meeting on a photo shoot in the Bahamas. He found her unconscious at her residency on Monday night.

Gia was admitted to the hospital in critical condition and put on life support. “Due to a critical loss of brain and organ function, life support was withdrawn today [Wednesday],” her family says in a statement. “Ms. Allemand passed away peacefully with her mother, boyfriend, and other life-long friends by her side.”

Ryan issued his own statement regarding his girlfriend’s passing. “I’m deeply grateful for all the love and support we’ve received from family, friends and fans,” he says. “Gia was the more beautiful person I knew inside and out and she always smiled and made everyone else around her smile. She had such an amazing impact on my life and anyone that knew her was blessed. All I have left is to cherish those memories we made together and help perpetuate the many values, faith and love that we shared.”
