Glee Creator Ryan Murphy Talks Cory, Lea & Season 5 Hiatus

Cory Monteith & Lea Michele

Despite Cory Monteith’s sudden death on July 13, Glee will only push its fall premiere date back one week from Sept. 19 to Sept. 26. But, that doesn’t mean a hiatus won’t come a little further down the road.

In a new interview, the show’s creator Ryan Murphy revealed that the first two episodes of Season 5 will remain the same Beatles tribute themes as planned. Then, episode 3 will address Cory’s character, Finn’s, death in a tribute to the late actor. After that, Ryan says he doesn’t know what he and the writers plan to do, and they will definitely be taking a “long” writer’s hiatus.

Because Cory was in a serious relationship with another one of the show’s stars, Lea Micheleshe was an important part of the decision making regarding how the show would continue. “Ultimately, we made no decisions without consulting Lea,” Ryan explained, adding, “We laid out every possible option. And she was very adamant that she thought it was best for the cast and crew to get back together sooner [rather] than later.”

Lea has been privately dealing with Cory’s death alongside his family, but in the interview, Ryan gave us an insight into how she’s holding up. “Lea is obviously very grief-stricken, but she’s also one of the strongest people I know,” he said. “She wants people to be better and get back to work. So, that’s what we’re going to do.”

The Glee creator also revealed that he and Lea staged an intervention for Cory last Spring when they noticed he was using drugs again. This is ultimately what got him to voluntarily check into rehab. “As soon as we found out, we staged an intervention with Cory that Lea was 100 percent running out of love and trying to get him better,” he explained.

Unfortunately, although Cory completed his rehab program in a month, he was found dead in his Vancouver hotel room on July 13 with heroin and alcohol in his system. There’s no doubt, though, that the show that made Cory a household name will honor him appropriately.
