New Faces Of Rock: Star's Favorite "Young Man Bands"

Hot Chelle Rae

Sometimes you just know. “As soon as we recorded ‘Tonight, Tonight,’ I thought to myself, This is going to blow up.” Hot Chelle Rae [pictured] lead singer Ryan Follese tells Star. He was right. The Nashville-based pop-rock band sold over six million singles from their sophomore album, Whatever, winning best new artist at the AMA’s in the process. Their latest addictive single, “Hung Up,” promises to be another huge hit, and their highly anticipated third album will drop later this year.

The Wanted

Sure, they were formed after thousands auditioned, but the English and Irish lads in The Wanted refuse to be just another boy band. After writing five songs, on their self-titled debut, the guys penned a whopping ten tracks for their second album, (Battleground), which also saw their first huge stateside hit, “Glad You Came,” and sold three million copies in the U.S. Big names have taken notice. The Wanted have opened for Justin Beiber and Britney Spears and collaborators like LMFAO, Pitbull and Chris Brown will all turn up on their new album, set for release this spring.

Boys Like Girls

Success seemed to come a little too fast to the guys in Boys Like Girls, who found themselves co-headlining with Good Charlotte after their 2006 debut with Taylor Swift on a track off their second album (Love Drunk), which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard‘s list of Top Rock Albums. But after a two-year hiatus that had fans fearing a breakup, the Boys returned last December with Crazy World, on which they ditched emo-pop for a more country sound, with singles like “Be Your Everything” and “Life of the Party.”

Atlas Genius

Like so many groups before them, the guys in Australian indie band Atlas Genius — brothers Keith, Steven and Michael Jeffrey and pal Darren Sell — earned their first paychecks working as a cover band. But, unlike most, they were saving their money and used it to build their own studio. Amazingly, the first track they recorded there, “Trojans,” blew up online and quickly shot to the States (thanks to MTV’s 120 Minutes and constant play on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation channel). By the time Atlas Genius was visiting the U.S. last year, every major label was begging to sign them. They chose Warner Bros., and their first album, When It Was Now, featuring 11 tracks with an ’80s New Wave sound came out in February.
